　　本片是导演Danfung的首部纪录片，获得了2011年圣丹斯电影节世界电影纪录片单元评委会大奖。电影以极具冲击力的画面，让观众零距离接触到战争冲突和战后生活，真实展现了人类为战争付出的真正代价。

　　Danfung Dennis曾是一名摄影记者，多年来一直为报纸杂志提供伊拉克和阿富汗冲突的摄影照片。尽管图片传播范围很广，但他认为这些不足以传达战争的残酷，社会公众早已习惯这些战争场面，他们变得麻木不仁。2009年夏天，他决定带上装备重返阿富汗，期望用他亲眼所见，尽量如实还原战争的本来面目。他当时并没有打算拍纪录片，所以他没有剧本、拍摄计划和资金，只有防弹衣、一个背包还有一台定制的佳能5D。

　　Danfung被安排与美国海军陆战队第八战队一起，跟随部队在不同的省份行进，直到他得知有一场对阿富汗南部塔利班武装的重要袭击将在Helmand River山谷打响，他才决定要将其拍摄下来。在战场上，他遇见了25岁的Nathan Harris中士，他们一起在前线作战数小时，遭到了敌军的全面反击。在没有救援和被包围的情况下，这群部队与神出鬼没的敌人战斗。

　　Nathan Harris在一次伏击战中被击中险些丧命，养好伤之后，Nathan回到了北卡罗来那家中。在妻子Ashley无私的爱和鼓励支持下，Nathan努力克服由士兵转为平民生活的各种困难。从这里开始，影片的视角进行了转换，从战争纪实新闻报道转向一个普通士兵的战后生活。身体上的疼痛让Nathan逐渐依赖上了药物。当他尝试去填补战争经历和日常生活之间的差距时，他变得越来越痛苦。
